There is no such thing as the absence of design every choice shapes the experience of the home There is simply good design, or there is poor design

When we design a home – whether a single residence or an entire development – we are making countless decisions about how people will live, move and feel within a space. Good design brings a quiet sense of ease, while poor design reveals itself through subtle frustrations that accumulate over time.

One of the most persistent misconceptions is that an interior designer's role begins and ends with selecting colours, fabrics and furniture. In reality, those visible elements are simply the final expression of a much deeper process.

As Mary Pakamard’s reputation grew in Phuket, she began to notice a recurring pattern. Clients would invite her into completed homes, hoping that new furniture, lighting or decoration could somehow transform the way the spaces felt. Yet by then, the decisions that shaped the experience of the home had already been made. Once walls are poured in concrete or laid in brick, the proportions of a room, the movement through a home, the relationship between spaces and the way natural light enters are largely fixed. Interior design can elevate a well-conceived space, but it cannot easily overcome the limitations of one that was never resolved in the first place.

What began as requests to redesign interiors soon evolved into commissions to rethink entire homes from the inside out. Clients increasingly recognised that the most meaningful improvements were rarely found in finishes or furnishings, but in the architecture itself.

For Mary, the evolution of M2 Plus from a small interior design practice into a fully integrated design and construction company was less a business strategy than a natural progression. If the experience of a home is shaped by every decision made along the way, then every discipline must share responsibility for that experience. Architects, engineers, interior designers, craftsmen, project managers, site supervisors and landscapers are not separate contributors working in sequence; they are all part of the same conversation.

Today, Mary's design studio on Srisoonthorn Road occupies three floors and more than 1,300 square metres, bringing together every stage of the design process under one roof. Rather than moving between separate suppliers, consultants and showrooms, clients work alongside the design team in a single creative environment where ideas evolve naturally. Materials, finishes and bespoke furniture are displayed side by side, allowing every element of a home to be considered together rather than in isolation. One discussion may centre on the proportions of a reclaimed teak dining table; the next might explore a child's bedroom complete with a slide and handcrafted bunk beds. Every decision is made with one objective in mind – not to create a collection of beautiful rooms, but a home that feels complete.

It is here, tucked quietly into a corner of the second floor, that Mary is most often found. Usually there is a sketchbook open in front of her. One day it might contain the first lines of a new home; the next, the gentle curve of a bespoke armchair or the proportions of a staircase. After designing hundreds of homes, Mary has developed an instinct for recognising how people naturally inhabit space – often long before construction begins. Around her, above and below, the eighty designers, architects, engineers, project managers and craftsmen who make up M2 Plus keep the studio in constant motion. Yet despite the scale of the business, every project still begins in exactly the same way: a pencil, a blank page, and a simple question – how should this home feel to live in?
