Future Stars Shine at the 2nd Laguna Phuket Junior Golf Tournament

Close to 50 junior golfers from around Phuket competed at the 2nd Laguna Phuket Junior Golf Tournament held in partnership with the British International School Phuket last Sunday 27 March 2016. Played over the award-winning Laguna Golf Phuket’s 18-hole golf course, the juniors were thrilled with the fun yet challenging windy conditions.

Aimed at growing the game of golf, Laguna Golf Phuket has created this event to nurture junior golfing talents coming from the Southern regions of Thailand.

“Having successfully hosted our 1st Laguna Phuket Junior Golf Tournament last June, it is fantastic to see so many young golfers continuing to play and practice at our golf course to improve their game”, said Director of Golf Mr Paul Wilson.

16-year–old Chanisara Kruakaew won the Overall Girls Championship, whilst 15-year-old Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk scored a remarkable gross 69 (2-under par) to become the Overall Boys Champion for 2016. In an effort to inspire and develop the youth, Laguna Golf Phuket awarded both Overall Champions a junior golf membership until the end of 2016.

Wilson enthused, “Our event provides a real tournament experience for junior golfers aged 6-18 years old. Creating a “Tour Event” with divisional prizes and trophies, topped with goodie bags, on-course branding and F&B stations, the juniors have a platform to gain valuable experience under tournament conditions and make new friends coming from other schools. They also learn about the physical, mental and technical aspects of their game - thriving at their best always. This event is achievable through the joint efforts of Laguna Golf Phuket team, British International School Phuket and all the wonderful event sponsors.

Mr. Oliver Bates, the Head Coach of the newly launched golf centre in British International School Phuket added, "We are privileged to partner with Laguna Golf Phuket to provide talented juniors the opportunity to attain higher levels of the sport and we expect to see it grow strongly in years to come. Thanks to Laguna Golf Phuket for their continued support.

Voted as Thailand’s Best Golf Course by World Golf Awards in November 2015, Laguna Golf Phuket has recently launched its junior golf membership, open to junior golf enthusiasts under 18 years old. Junior members can enjoy the alluring golf course with luxury clubhouse and world-class practice facilities. In addition, junior members will also receive attractive privileges at hotels, restaurants and spas in the Laguna Phuket integrated resort destination; along with reciprocal playing rights at over 200 top golf courses worldwide.

Supporting local junior golf development, Laguna Golf brand ambassador - six-time Major winner and golf legend Sir Nick Faldo had announced during his recent visit to Phuket on the appointment of Laguna Golf Phuket as the host of Phuket’s very first Faldo Series Thailand Championship – South qualifying tournament, scheduled in early September 2016.

The Faldo Series is regarded as the most extensive junior golf tournament series in the world. Staging over 40 events in 30 countries internationally, the Faldo Series benefits more than 7,000 young golfers each year.

Winners of each national Faldo Series event this year then qualify for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Finals – to be held in March 2017 at the renowned sister golf course Laguna Golf Lang Co, Central Vietnam, designed by Sir Nick Faldo himself. Past winners of the Faldo Series include Major champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
